Brief History of Rock

As any lover of rock can tell you, rock started being recognized as a genre and developed in the ’60s – with its roots lying in ’50s rock and roll (who could ever forget about the illustrious Elvis Presley?). Over time, more and more rock bands became well known and what seemed to be the kind of music that only rebellious and out of order teenagers would listen to became a great genre that seemed to encompass several niches – bands that focused on the overall message that they conveyed (The Beatles), others that focused more on the musicality (Jimi Hendrix) and some that considered that the lyrics should be at the heart of their musical activity (The Doors). Regardless of their focus, all bands seem to be part of this genre mainly because of the new wave that they represented – mainly the exposure of feelings, expression in all ways (even frustration – Nirvana) and saw music as an outlet of repressed emotions. Why did rock appeal so much to the audiences? The answer is as simple as could be – not only did the youth appreciate such a change from the ways of such a conservative world, but also a way of getting together (Woodstock). Nowadays, rock still has the same effect, adepts of this genre being irrefutably connected.
